FIRE DISTRUPT ACTIVITIES AT UNILAG. AN early morning inferno, on Tuesday, disrupted academic activities at the Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, Akoka. The arrival of fire fighters from the University of Lagos Fire Service, Yaba College of Technology Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and Lagos State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading. The fire, which reportedly started around 6.30a.m., was first noticed in the office of the secretary to the Head of Department of Physics. It ravaged the secretary’s office and spread to the HOD’s office from where it moved to other offices on the floor where the Physics department is located. The fire also gutted the Mathematics Department before the combined team of fire fighters finally put it out to the delight of hundreds of students, who had started arriving for lecture. The incident caused panic among students who had 7 o’clock lecture as many of them scrambled out of their classrooms. It also put a temporary hold to an early morning test that was due to be conducted in one of the physics classrooms as the office of the lecturer, who was due to conduct the test, was burnt Kingrobert Emukpoaruo, an assistant registrar in the university, confirmed the fire incident while the image maker in charge of the state police command,Joseph Jaiyeoba, informed the Nigerian Tribune that the police had commenced investigations on the circumstances leading to the inferno.
